Mel Kiper is wrong. It is a financial factor he doesn't take into consideration, Darnold has to get paid if you keep him. So, you take a chance on a rookie, or you take a chance on a guy who you have to pay 25 MM a year next year. So, that's why I think they move on. Sam didn't have great support, and really awful coaching, but at this point you move on let someone else try to rebuild him who isn't locked into the rookie deal. Either way you have to train a guy, might as well start fresh (and cheap), so you can add the weapons you need.

The most logical thing for the jets to do is trade the pick and surround darnold with talent. However, the environment is so poisonous for darnold that the best thing to do for everyone is to move on and have a fresh start somewhere else.

If he turns out to be as he was at USC, i.e., turning the ball over and making not good decisions, then you have to cut him loose and start struggling at QB. It is not worth the risk. I was never sold on Darnold at USC anyway. Take Wilson or Fields and get free agents, and draft good players in the later rounds, receivers like MarGues STevenson

Some very average QBs have won Super Bowls. Theismann, Williams, Rypen, Brad Johnson, Trent Dilfer, Foltz, Flacco. Tarkenton was better than Griese, Bradshaw and Stabler. Teams win Super Bowls. Jets are not a good team. It is not Sam's fault. Build with defense. Then the offensive line. Darnoldson or any average QB can win in that situation.

Sam Darnold is bad. He tries, but even with a limited cast, if you're a starter you will have to throw more than 9 TDs in 13 games. Plus half his interceptions are straight to the opposing DB and are plain dumb.
